Gastric emptying studies are used for evaluating the symptoms that may be due to slow and, less commonly, rapid emptying of the stomach.

PROCEDURE SUMMARY
Test article is administered by oral gavage (PO) to a group of 6 male overnight fasted Wistar rats weighing 180 ± 20 g. After 60 minutes, a test meal is administered orally (2 ml/rat) and the animals are sacrificed 30 minutes later by carbon dioxide (CO2) asphyxiation. The esophagus and pylorus are then ligated and the stomach is removed. The stomach is weighed and then cut open, emptied and weighed again to determine the volume of the remaining test meal. Suggested Testing: n=6/group (study design dependent). Doses may be administered PO, IV, IP and SC.

All aspects of this work are performed in general accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of laboratory animals (National Academy Press, Washington, DC, 2011). The study protocol was approved by the Pharmacology Discovery Services IACUC and is performed with the oversight of veterinarians to assure the humane treatment of laboratory animals.
