Gastric acid secretion is a procedure to evaluate gastric function. This assay is to evaluate possible differences in basal gastric acid secretion with regard to severity of gastroesophageal reflux disease.

PROCEDURE SUMMARY
Test article is administered by intraperitoneal injection (IP) to a group of 6 male or female Wistar overnight-fasted rats weighing 150 ± 20 g. Two hours before and 30 minutes after administration of the test article, gastric acidity (µEq HCl/ml) is determined following oral gavage with normal saline (2 ml). Suggested Testing: n=6/group (study design dependent). Doses may be administered PO, IV, IP and SC.

All aspects of this work are performed in general accordance with the Guide for the Care and Use of laboratory animals (National Academy Press, Washington, DC, 2011). The study protocol was approved by the Pharmacology Discovery Services IACUC and is performed with the oversight of veterinarians to assure the humane treatment of laboratory animals.
